The History Of The AMB
The Black and Blue Board (Proto AMB)
The ORIGINAL incarnation of the Ataris Message Board cannot be forgotten. This board mirrored the color scheme of The Ataris "Blue Skies..." Release and was taken down and replaced with the "Blue Board" around the time of the "End is Forever" cd release.
The Blue Board (First Generation)
the-amb began as a message board for popular rock group The Ataris, (the acronym of AMB originally meant "Ataris Message Board"). The message board first became popular in the late 1990s after the release of Ataris albums Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits and End Is Forever. The albums drew fans from across the United States and Canada as well as the United Kingdom and Australia. The message board had a distinct, blue template and was later referred to as "the blue board" incarnation of the AMB.
phpbb Version (Second Generation)
To mark the release of the new Ataris album So Long, Astoria, the band's website was completely redone along with its message board. The message board had a default phpbb template ("subsilver"). Many of the AMB members from the blue board carried over to the new board as new fans began to appear in anticipation of the new album. Many of the fans were constantly "flamed" or bullied for constantly asking ignorant questions about the band and lacking an ability to generally carry an intelligent conversation. Fans who couldn't correctly display spelling or grammar were constantly harassed. It was at this time that members of the AMB began to lose interest in The Ataris themselves, but still enjoyed talking to each other. Frequent jokes and insults directed towards The Ataris (and Kris Roe in particular) arose as a result. There became a wide gap between the members of the AMB who were there for conversation and the members who were there as fans of The Ataris.
Meanwhile, the AMB had trouble simply staying online. The board was constantly being hacked, spammed or simply neglected. Kris Roe himself became a little uneasy at the negative attitude coming from the AMB members towards new fans. Eventually, two veteran AMB members decided to detach from the Ataris Message Board and create their own incarnation that had nothing to do with The Ataris.
The New AMB (Third Generation)
Jeff Arellano and Mike Blondin, who did not have any lives, and were two popular members of the AMB. Jeff was widely known for making an insurmountable amount of posts in a single day, a true sign that the man had no real friends. while Mike portrayed the common lonely single Canadian man who never knew girls existed outside of a computer screen. Together, they put time and money into creating www.the-amb.com (or "The New AMB" as it was called by members). Word of the new board spread quickly over AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger and similar instant messaging mediums. Within a few weeks, about one hundred members had joined the new AMB - just slightly less than the amount that frequented The Ataris related AMB.
The New AMB was similar to The Ataris AMB in certain respects. One being that many of the same members joined. Another was the decision to run the board on a phpbb server, which allowed members to use the "subsilver" message board skin. Later, a "blue board" skin was made as well.
Unfortunately, running the board on phpbb proved to be difficult for Jeff and Mike. Many of the same problems that hindered the Ataris AMB became evident. After a two day crash, Mike and Jeff decided to begin the AMB anew.
the-amb (Fourth Generation)
By keeping the same URL (the-amb.com) most, if not all of the members from The New AMB carried over to the new vBulliten message board. This is now the current incarnation of the AMB. Initial complaints were centered around the board's template, which was unattractive compared to the phpbb versions. However, most members quickly realized that they still frequented the message board for the community, not the template.
